About Princes Risborough

This is the town where the famous aviator Amy Johnson once lived. It is a fascinating old market town lying between the Vale of Aylesbury and the Western edge of the Chiltern Hills. Even with the growth experienced during the 20th century the town has fortunately managed to retain its "old world" charm.

The town's most famous building is Princes Risborough Manor House, a handsome red brick period building of the 17th century, which is set in a peaceful location a short walk away from the High Street. This is now in the hands of the National Trust and is open to the public. The Market House on Market Square is also of note, this has open arcades where once a market was held, it was rebuilt during the 19th century.

An exquisite feature of the town is the Norman Church of St.Mary, the church shows restoration work from the 13th and 14th centuries and a modern spire built during the early part of the 20th century. It has a pulpit carved at the time of the Restoration and its triple lancet Norman window in the south aisle is particularly noteworthy.

This is an entirely unspoilt town with many charming buildings including some with delightful "herringbone" brickwork, it has a pleasing selection of shops, good pubs, old inns and a choice of restaurants and cafe's. For those wishing to stay to sample the delights of the town there is an excellent range of accommodation.

On an historic note - the history of Princes Risborough stretches back to the time of the Doomsday Book, but its "Royal" name is thought to be from the 14th century, it refers the Black Prince who owned land and had a small palace close to the town.
